Vartan Gregorian
Vartan Gregorian (1934-2021) is an Armenian-American scholar, lecturer, and historian. He has been the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Affairs since 1997. He was born in Iran and moved to the United States at the age of 22. He holds a double Ph.D. from Stanford University. He served as president of the University of Pennsylvania, was president of the New York Public Library from 1981 to 1989, and was the first foreign president of Brown University. Gregorian is "one of the most respected and frequently honored academic intellectuals in America." He has been considered "a preeminent teacher and leader in American higher education." Gregorian is known for his fundraising skills. In 2007, the Financial Times called him a "fundraising genius."
