In 2023, the Newmag Publishing House introduced the novel “Rojava” by Argentinian-Armenian writer Magda Tagtachian to Armenian readers. To mark this occasion, the author visited Armenia and was featured on the “Review” program of 168TV.

Magda Tagtachian shared with 168.am that one of the objectives of her novel “Rojava” is to raise awareness and shed light on the efforts of Kurdish women in their battle against the authoritarian regime established by Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad. It particularly highlights their fight against the Islamic State terrorist group, which has ensnared numerous women for sexual exploitation.

“There are still over 3,000 women held in captivity in the region. One of the novel's objectives is to combat the prevalent patriarchal culture in that area. During that era, women were unable to make decisions about their lives and are reliant on the choices made by their husbands or fathers”.

Based on her observations, there exist double standards from the international community about both Rojava and Artsakh, and these disparities have persisted throughout various struggles and resistances. “Hypocrisy has consistently played a role in the history of warfare, struggles, and resistance. Some complex issues receive extensive publicity and global attention, while others remain entirely inaccessible. In the case of Artsakh, for instance, the fact that 120,000 people have been under siege for 3 months can be considered a crime and a disgrace to the entire world. The Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance operates with great finesse and also collaborates with Europe, as Europe is averse to the influx of Kurdish and Syrian refugees into their countries.

Turkey's strategic importance appears to prevent the international community from taking a strong stance against Turkey, even in cases that might warrant it. While the political implications of this statement may seem harsh, it's worth noting that under President Biden's leadership, the US has officially recognized the Armenian Genocide, and there have been subsequent diplomatic efforts involving a delegation sent to negotiate with Ankara. In this context, it is crucial to consider the partnerships and interactions of superpowers such as the USA, Great Britain, Israel, China, and Russia and how they present themselves on the global stage”.

She envisions that achieving peace with Turkey and Azerbaijan is challenging because of the widespread state-level hostility towards Armenians in those countries. “The only possibility for change lies in a shift in the policies of Turkey and Azerbaijan. In Azerbaijan, children in kindergartens are exposed to anti-Armenian songs and poems, fostering hatred toward Armenia from an early age. Nevertheless, these circumstances do not deter Artsakh from persisting in its struggle for its rights, with support from those willing to help, whether it's Armenia, the Diaspora, or the international community. The situation is dire, as we are aware of the conditions faced by the besieged residents of Artsakh. The world's silence is both shameful and condemnable because we are in the 21st century, and there are numerous means available to raise awareness and make this issue more visible”.
