How animator Naira Muradyan created the amusing and entertaining cover of “Manyunya” (video in Armenian)
Several days ago, Newmag presented the first part of Narine Abgaryan’s “Manyunya” novel. This novel was a huge success for the author and it paved the way for her further success. Narine Abgaryan wrote about her childhood, the Soviet times and the warmest
Russian-speaking fairy-haired Manyunya turned into an Armenian-speaking brown-haired kid. Newmag republished the book and presented to the Armenian reader the re-edited version of the book with a new cover. The author of this colorful and unique cover is animator Naira Muradyan. “There are some parts in the book that make me laugh each time I read the book. I love everything about Narine - her style, her mind, the Berd that she describes.”
Naira Muradyan had Manyunya’s character in mind for a long time. She simply added some colors and lines and came up with this colorful and unique portrayal of Manyunya. “I have known Narine for a long time now. Her works were published in LiveJournal back then. She was just starting to write “Manyunya”. I have read the book and I had the characters in my mind for a long time now. Also, Narine’s writing style is so descriptive that you don’t even need to come up with something. If you simply use her portrayal, you will eventually get the picture.”
The book cover portrays not only Manyunya, but also the granny. Although Manyunya captures the main part of the cover, if looked closely, the reader will notice the feet of the granny and the children who run around her. “I think that granny is one of the main characters of the book. The kids are running around her feet, because physically she is just too big for the kids.”
“Manyunya”’s new cover seems to be a separate little story itself. The three pictures come together to become one big portrayal of warm childhood memories. “If you put together all three parts, you will notice one whole picture there. I have put all the beautiful and warm childhood memories that I have had into this work. For example, the granny’s furniture that you see is in fact my grandmother’s furniture.”
Naira and Narine have known each other for a long time now. The author did not intervene in the process of creation. The cover was created based on the characters and the childhood memories of Naira Muradyan.“I haven’t invented anything. I just combined my childhood memories with what I have read in the book.”
The cover of the book encompasses all the unique and beautiful details of the childhood of the Soviet generation, which is full of warmth, fun and also hardships.
