In the novel "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry", as in his previous works, Fredrik Backman introduces readers to characters with unique and exceptional personalities. Within just a few pages, these characters become as close as family.
At the age of 25, the Swedish writer who had left theology and
worked as a truck driver decided to write first for newspapers and magazines,
and later for his blog. In 2013, he published his first novel. Backman’s books
are known for their bright and sharply domestic humor. A few years later, his
novels were translated into 40 languages and sold over five million copies.
"My
Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry" tells the story
of a seven-year-old girl and her grandmother. After the death of her beloved
grandmother, the young girl finds herself in an unusual, surprising, and
adventure-filled world. The story begins with letters that the girl must
deliver to her grandmother’s friends. The novel’s title is revealed through
these letters: "My grandmother says hello and says sorry." The
letters are meant to apologize to the grandmother's neighbors for any distress
she may have caused them.
Neighbors are a recurring theme in Backman’s work, featuring
prominently in his novel "A Man Called Ove". Like Ove, this novel can
also be described as a tragicomedy. Although the book is not intended for
children, the relationship between the grandmother and her grandchild, along
with the seven-year-old protagonist, gives it a childlike quality.
A novel about the amazing, unpredictable nature of life, the
importance of family, and the value of friends. With dozens of vividly drawn
characters, each with extraordinary charisma, "My
Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry" offers an
exciting and humorous exploration of life’s complexities.
The novel presents an engaging and amusing story of an elderly,
somewhat lost grandmother and a granddaughter who stands out from her peers. It
delves into themes of life, death, and being different. The main partner for
this book is the "Bukinist".
