The second volume of Margaret Mitchell's novel “Gone with the wind” is already available in bookstores. A century later, the first volume of a book published in Armenian was sold out in a matter of days. If in the first volume there are many harsh descrip

A great novel can not help but cause a great stir and, of course, scandals. As soon as World War II broke out, the novel “Gone with the wind” was banned in Nazi Germany. The accusation was that the book encouraged the activists of the French resistance movement. Margaret Mitchell biographer Debra Freer notes about this in one of her interviews: “The Nazis feared that gone with the wind would awaken hope in the people and give them the strength to endure the fascist occupation. The book was banned in the Soviet Union after the war.”

Ironically, the book was banned in the USSR because Scarlett Ohara was not a supporter of the war; her image was dangerous for the communists.

Surprisingly, even 80 years after its publication and its rise to the big screen, obstacles still accompany the novel. The American cable company HBO Max removed the movie “Gone with the wind” from its application. The reason was national discrimination. According to the company, the film presents ethnic-racial stereotypes which are now unacceptable. The company had to decide how to present it nowadays. Black journalist Nichel Turner remembers:  “Every time I watched the film with my black friends, they said that it idealized the slavery of the south. Yes, this film has a place in history, but it is also problematic.”

Two weeks later, the film was restored and made available, but before it could be seen, HBO attached two additional explanatory videos. In the first, film critic Jacqueline Stewart explains how to perceive the film. The second video discusses the manifestations of racial discrimination in the film “Gone with the wind.”
