Milton Friedman wrote his “Capitalism and Freedom” book in a period, when even the United States was discussing the benefits of socialism. Scientific and political circles viewed the Soviet Union with awe, many arguing that socialism was more viable.

Friedman's ideas seemed unreal in the 1960s; very few agreed with him. He offered revolutionary theses. Such as, "The government should have minimal influence. It should be limited to a few functions. The government should organize the defense of the country from external threats, the protection of the individual from the coercion of another and create a mechanism by which we will be able to formulate the rules that govern us."

Friedman argued that compulsory American conscription should be abolished. It was such a shocking idea that no one believed in its implementation. But years later, with the help of Friedman, President Nixon achieved it. According to the author of the book, the ordinary consumer does not have any leverage in the market, which leads to inequalities in the market. "Most businessmen are the enemies of free markets. The real beneficiaries of free markets are the ordinary consumers, ordinary people, but, unfortunately, they do not have the political leverage that the businessmen have."

The moment of receiving the Nobel Prize in Economics even turned into a scandal. However, it did not stop Friedman, he continued the public debates, and moved forward his theses. "Economic freedom is a necessary condition for political freedom, but it is not enough. On the other hand, political freedom is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for economic freedom. I predict that, for example, China will move towards political freedoms if it continues its successful path to economic freedoms."

Activists in the 1970s considered Friedman an enemy. He was claimed to have supported the dictatorial regime in Chile. However, soon his book became a bestseller. Translated into 18 languages, "Capitalism and Freedom" provides solutions to complex problems, enriches and expands economic and political thinking even after 60 years.
