According to Nora Krug, "On Tyranny: 20 lessons from the 20th century" first lesson for societies that are on the verge of democratic collapse. "Timothy Snyder and I have the same worldview. The book is a true guide to democracy. It helps to identify the signs of tyranny and dictatorship. If we don't learn the lessons of history, we will make the same mistakes repeatedly".

Nora Krug used many archival materials from the Holocaust Museum, the Library of Congress, the Historical Archives of the European Union, as well as her archive. She examined hundreds of photos. The book also includes a photo of her father's chest. "One of the used photos is a portrait of a man. I found it in an antique shop in West Berlin. It's from a German soldier's album. Along with the illustrations, the artist used archival photos to show historical facts about how political decisions affect the lives of the people.
