Newmag Publishing House presents the “100 Years of Humanity” book. The book is published with the initiative of the Armenian Red Cross Society. It is dedicated to the 100-year history of the organization. Over the course of a century, the organization has

For more than two years, Newmag in cooperation with the Armenian Red Cross researched all the sources, collected a unique archival documentation and presented it in one book. The work includes never-before-published materials from the National Archives of Armenia and the National Library, key statements of high-ranking officials and unique photos of the organization. In the scope of this project the publishing house has interviewed the organization's leaders of different years. The interviews are mainly about the assistance of the organization during wartime, disasters and pandemics.

Founded in 1920, the Armenian Red Cross Society has grown from a small organization into a strong and stable humanitarian organization. Initially, the mission was limited to wartime assistance, as it was created for that purpose specifically. But over time, the initiative became broader, including more members and expanding the geography. The Red Cross reaches out to residents affected by disasters and provides all the necessary social and healthcare assistance.

The president of the Armenian Red Cross Organization Mkhitar Mnatsakanyan claims that this book gives a detailed overview on the 100-year history of the organization. “The Armenian Red Cross was founded 100 years ago. The organization aimed to help the nation to overcome the humanitarian crisis. Throughout time the Armenian Red Cross has become a credible and strong humanitarian organization. Our rich history is filled with hardships, challenges and achievements.”

The earthquake in 1988 was a challenge with a huge responsibility. The Union of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of the USSR was very active, and was one of the first to rush to the disaster zone with its aid programs. The Red Cross offered all the necessary assistance. The organization has also been active over the past year, with numerous social and health programs, both during the recent 44-day war and during Covid-19.

In recent years, the engagement of the youth has been extensively developed: 2500-3000 volunteers join the organization each year. The secretary general of the organization Anna Yeghiazaryan claims that being a part of the Red Cross is a lifestyle and a mission. “Each time you notice that your job alleviates the concerns of hundreds of people or you see how displaced people, lonely elderly and vulnerable children are not left alone, you gain the strength to continue working despite the many difficulties and obstacles.”

As an authorized member of the International Red Cross Movement, Armenian Red Cross Society is one of the largest organizations in the country. The most unique and interesting details of the organization are summed up in Gohar Manukyan’s “100 Years of Humanity” book.
