Demir Sönmez

Demir Sönmez (born 1960) is a Swiss documentary photographer of Armenian-Kurdish origin. He was born in Karin (Erzurum), studied in Ankara, and has lived in Geneva since 1990. He worked as a journalist and photographer in Turkey in the 1980s, but was unable to continue his work due to political pressure. He resumed photojournalism in 2006. Sönmez writes on human rights, social justice, and diversity. He is a member of Reporters Sans Frontières and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). Since 2009, he has been a columnist for the Tribune de Genève. His work has been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions and published in magazines.
