Nicolas Mathieu (born 1978) is a French writer, one of the leading voices in contemporary European literature. He grew up in a working-class family. From an early age, he experienced social differences, which influenced his literary themes. He studied history and cinema at the University of Metz. He has worked in the fields of culture and media. His literary debut was in 2014 with the novel "War Against the Animals", but his second novel, "And the Children After Them" in 2018 brought him great literary success. Mathieu's works are often compared to the 19th-century realist writers Balzac and Zola. He combines the psychological depth of personal destinies with sharp political and social criticism. At the heart of his literature are adolescence, class inequalities, deindustrialization and the search for identity in the modern world.
