Paul R. Ignatius was born in Glendale in 1920, but his roots are in Kharberd, a historical Armenian city. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he graduated from Harvard University. He served for 8 years in the administrations of U.S. Presidents J. Kennedy and L. Johnson, as Deputy Secretary of Defense, and in 1967, as Secretary of the Navy. In honor of his achievements, the U.S. Navy named one of its guided-missile cruisers, now called the USS Paul Ignatius, after him in 2019.
