A bookstore owner who writes bestsellers: interesting facts about the author of the "New Day" (video)
The author of the "New Day" Nikos Chrysos lives in Athens, where he owns a bookshop of old books. He wrote the novel "New Day" in 8 years. Based on the New Testament, the book tells the story of the homeless and their persecutors, touching on the problem
Greek contemporary writer and editor Nikos Chrysos was born in Athens. He has owned a bookshop of old books for over twenty years. And from the bookstore, Nikos Khrisos answered Newmag's questions.
"I am a big fan of books. I don't consider myself a writer, but someone who is constantly searching and learning, who always wants to learn something new from books. I started writing a book precisely because of the desire to learn and find something new. I can't tell you much about myself, although I have many interests, I like to travel, and I play the accordion. Before opening the store, I studied cinematography, I was involved in cinema."
In 2009, Chrisos' first book, "The Mystery of the Last Page", was published, and already in 2018, he wrote the novel "New Day", which won the European Union literary prize a year later.
"I studied in detail the topic of the homeless, the way of life in different countries, I talked with homeless people. Some people have consciously chosen the life of a homeless person. There are characters in my novel who decided to live like that. The homeless are on the edge and endlessly walk on that edge, unlike us and our regular lives. Unfortunately, after writing the book, the situation has not changed even now. Over the years, the situation of the homeless in Europe has worsened, there is no care at the state level."
Nikos Chrysos also told Newmag why he chose the structure of the novel, so to speak, reminiscent of the New Testament. Critics often liken the heroes of the novel to Jesus and his apostles. The writer agrees; that's exactly how the idea was.
"When I started writing the novel, I thought for a long time about how to build my story, how to present the characters. In that search, I came to the New Testament and chose that structure. The New Testament has existed for two thousand years, it has an ideal structure as a work, people have been reading it for centuries, and the lives of the heroes are presented so perfectly and interestingly that my choice is rather a tribute to the New Testament."
Nikos Chrysos does not reveal the subject and plot of the new book, but it already exists. Until then, Newmag recommends reading the novel “New Day”. In this work of fiction, the events take place in a city and port, the name of which the author does not mention, so that every reader can understand the novel, because the characters and their feelings are universal and will move everyone, regardless of nationality and property.
