Written exactly one hundred years ago, this sentence opens Aksel Bakunts’s short story "Mtnadzor", one of the most significant works of Armenian literature and an exceptional testament to the historical memory and cultural heritage of Syunik.

Dedicated to the centenary of the story's writing and first publication, this new book presents the complete history of its creation. It addresses the literary, political, and social realities of 1926, the historical-geographical roots of the work, the prototypes of its characters, and the real-life basis of the described events.

Writer and literary critic Ara Zargaryan’s work "Aksel Bakunts’s 'Mtnadzor'" is the first comprehensive study to synthesize all information regarding the formation and publication of the story. The book is based on rich archival and documentary materials, as well as photographs.

The author explores how real people, events, and locations were transformed into artistic characters and prototypes within the narrative. "Mtnadzor" is examined not only as a work of literature, but also as a testament to Syunik’s past, social relations, and the region's cultural milieu.

The study also addresses the story's actual geographical environment, a significant portion of which is today occupied by Azerbaijan. This circumstance accords the work not only literary value, but also important significance in preserving memory: the natural world, human fates, and the social picture of the era described by Bakunts continue to testify to a territory whose history and cultural trace cannot be erased.

The book "Aksel Bakunts’s 'Mtnadzor'" is published within the framework of the Newmag and Friends program. It unites literary analysis, archival documents, and historical memory, allowing the reader to rediscover the origins and significance of Bakunts’s work anew.

Ara Zargaryan studied at the Yerevan Educational Complex of the Mekhitarist Congregation and served in the Defense Army of the Republic of Artsakh from 2012 to 2014. He participated in the 2020 Artsakh War, and in 2022, as a militia member, took part in the combat operations in Jermuk. He holds a PhD in Philological Sciences.
