03/24/2025

‘Broken Shield’ is a multi-faceted examination of the 2020 Artsakh War, bringing together the insights of 17 Armenian and international experts. Edited by Vicken Cheterian, the collection was published as part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s “Where Do We Go Next?” project.
This in-depth volume consists of 16 articles exploring the key factors that shaped the outcome of the war, from diplomatic precedents and military shortcomings to geopolitical developments and the role of social and political transformations in Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The book features the research of esteemed scholars and analysts, including:
Gevorg Oskanyan, Vicken Cheterian, Naira Sahakyan, Asbed Kotchikian, Zhirayr Amirkhanyan, Narek Sukiasyan, Sevinj Samadzade, Cengiz Çandar, Laurence Broers, Leonid Nersisyan, Servin Moor, Hovsep Babayan, Sheila Paylan, Joel Veldkamp, Simon Maghakyan, Tigran Yekavian, and Arif Yunusov.
The authors examine the intended and unintended consequences of Armenia’s policies before and during the war, analyzing how strategic decisions influenced the conflict’s outcome. A comparative analysis of the Second Karabakh War and the Russian-Ukrainian War sheds light on shifts in modern warfare and their impact on regional conflicts.
Additionally, the book provides a critical review of Armenia’s Western-style military reforms during the interwar period, assessing why they fell short and how their failure contributed to the war’s result.
“Broken Shield” is an essential resource for understanding the war’s lessons and shaping future policy.
The book’s main partner is the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. As part of a collaborative initiative between Newmag Publishing House and the Foundation, the “New Thought, New Translation” book forum will take place on March 27-28 at the Holiday Inn Yerevan Hotel. The official presentation of “Broken Shield” is scheduled for March 28 at 7:10 PM.
