Charles Aznavour’s 94 Years in One Book:
07/26/2024
The complete volume includes five of his autobiographical works and a collection of short stories published by Newmag. In his memoirs, Aznavour speaks candidly about family, past challenges, and career difficulties.
The French chanson giant’s treasured memories, reflections, life
bitterness, aspirations, struggles, love, sorrow, the essence of life, the
rules for persevering, self-education, and the path to perfection—these
encompass the multiple lives of Charles Aznavour in 94 years, all captured in
one book: "Aznavour: Prose, Poems."
The heart of this giant, ever clinging to life, beat in a whisper,
continually recounting past days and the final door of love on the road to
eternity. The titles of Aznavour’s Armenian-translated books, which are already
familiar to Armenian-speaking readers in separate volumes, echo these
sentiments.
Life was his teacher; his education came from Cornell, Racine,
Guitry, Hugo, and Pagnol. The lack of formal higher education drove the
legendary artist to study and read relentlessly. His relatives claimed that
Charles had a form of “book bulimia,” while he insisted that his library was
his temple.
"When I’m going to die, I want to fall at my desk... I love
people who disappear suddenly..."
How did his parents, Knar and Misha, remain in France while
waiting for U.S. immigration papers? How did he end up penniless in the United
States? Who were the women in his life who inspired and admired him? What pain
and sorrow did he carry with him? Readers will find answers to these questions
in Aznavour’s autobiographies, where he meticulously detailed episodes of his
life as if to sincerely open his heart to his native audience.
"...I have already reached the age limit, and from this
moment, I must count how many months, days, and hours are left, which may be
the last. This is the age when one should strive to live fully every second. It
is hard to imagine that this life was given to you and is now being taken away.
I never take back what I give."
