On the eve of FrancoFest2024, the delegates of the Goncourt Academy arrived in Armenia and were hosted at the Morning Show on Armenia TV.

Representatives of the Goncourt Academy came from France to participate in the Newmag publishing house's French literature and art festival, FrancoFest2024.

The most famous and prestigious French literary award will have a national jury in Armenia, which will be officially announced at FrancoFest itself. The representatives of Goncourt spoke about this important historical and literary event on the Morning Show of Armenia TV.

French writer and philosopher Pascal Bruckner, a member of the Goncourt Prize jury, stated that the Goncourt Prize is the most prestigious French literary award. "Goncourt was founded 124 years ago. Of course, it is more popular in France. Thousands of books in French are published every year; there are about forty French literary prizes, but the Goncourt Prize is an indicator of quality literature."

Bruckner emphasized that choosing the Goncourt laureate is a difficult and responsible task. "We are trying to find a compromise between the quality of the writing and the plot. The book should be technically and qualitatively good, but it should also have an interesting plot that will attract readers."

Goncourt will establish a National Jury in Armenia with the joint efforts of the Newmag publishing house, the French Embassy in Armenia, the French University of Armenia, and the French Institute. Xavier Richard, adviser on culture and cooperation issues at the French Embassy in Armenia and director of the French Institute, does not consider the cooperation between Newmag and the Goncourt Prize to be accidental.

"Newmag has been translating and publishing francophone literature in Armenia for a long time. That's why the choice fell on Newmag. We filled this gap, and today we are engaged in that business."

The selection of the Goncourt laureate occurs every year in three stages. Françoise Rossino, the chief delegate of the Goncourt Academy, explained these stages: "At the beginning of September, the Goncourt Academy selects eight books from fifteen works, and then, in November, the book that receives the Goncourt Prize is selected from those books. The countries that are part of the national jury, in turn, announce their Goncourt winner."

Armenia is the 39th country to join the Grand Jury of the Goncourt Prize. François Rossino believes that this cooperation between Armenia and Goncourt will have a significant impact on the Armenian literary world. "The Newmag publishing house will translate the author chosen by the Armenian jury and publish it in Armenian, and the Goncourt red ribbon will appear on the book."
