At Newmag Summerfest, the Yeraz Book Series Presents “Kate Wanted to Be a Grandpa” (trailer)
06/06/2025
A heartwarming story of love and devotion, “Kate Wanted to Be a Grandpa” is a beautifully illustrated picture book that will captivate children and adults alike. The book is written by Latvian author and translator Signe Viška and illustrated by Elīna Brasliņa.
“Kate Wanted to Be a Grandpa” is Viška’s debut work, an endearing story about the special bond between a little girl and her grandfather. The connection is so strong that Kate doesn’t dream of being a princess or a hero. She simply wants to grow up to be like her grandpa.
The story reveals a child’s world where Grandpa is the central figure, calm, warm, and always prepared with lemon drops in his pocket. Kate admires her grandfather’s patience, kindness, and quiet strength. Through gentle storytelling, the book reminds us that children learn the most from the love, example, and presence of adults in their lives.
The book also carries a deeper message: the bond between grandparents and grandchildren is vital for emotional development. Studies show that children with strong grandparent relationships often have higher emotional intelligence, stronger self-esteem, and better resilience.
Beyond emotional support, grandparents are also guardians of family traditions, cultural memory, and life lessons. When Kate wishes to be like her grandfather, she is expressing a desire to carry forward those cherished values.
“Kate Wanted to Be a Grandpa” was translated into Armenian by Naira Khachatryan and is part of the Yeraz Book Series published by Newmag.
Come experience this tender story that celebrates love across generations. Book Presentation will be held on June 22, at 6:00 PM at Yeraz Park.
