Newmag Publishing House has released “Through Millennia and Days: Selected Works” by Armen Davtyan, a collection that brings together the poet's celebrated works from “Noravank” and “Visions in Solitary Cell”. This anthology captures the essence of Davtyan's profound contribution to Armenian poetry.
Armen Davtyan was a transformative figure in Armenian literature during the transitional period from Soviet rule to independence in the 1980s and 1990s. His poetry inspired readers and contemporaries alike, reshaping literary tastes and pushing the boundaries of language and imagination. Emerging in the early 1980s, Davtyan's bold and original voice quickly established him as a leader in the literary scene.
A graduate of the Faculty of Philology at Yerevan State University, Davtyan also studied at the Institute of Fine Arts and Theater. He began his editorial career in the late 1980s at “Garun” magazine and later contributed to “Munetik”, “Andin”, and the “Nor Dprots” publishing house. He became a member of the Writers' Union of Armenia in 1987.
“Through Millennia and Days” reflects Davtyan’s multifaceted identity as an Armenologist, Sumerologist, and poet. This collection, supported by his friends, highlights his literary brilliance through poems that bridge Armenia’s rich historical legacy with contemporary themes.
Although Davtyan has shifted his focus in recent years, dedicating his time to the study of Sumerian culture, his earlier works continue to resonate. Currently working in the Department of Historical and Cultural Astronomy at the Byurakan Observatory, Davtyan explores the connections between Armenian and Sumerian languages. His book “The Sumerian “Agricultural Guide” is in Armenian” delves into a cuneiform text from the 18th century BC, asserting a linguistic kinship between Armenian and Sumerian.
In addition to his poetic achievements, Armen Davtyan has authored four scientific monographs and over forty scholarly articles, cementing his legacy as both a literary and academic pioneer. “Through Millennia and Days” stands as a testament to his enduring impact on Armenian culture and thought.
