This is a novel-monologue about the fears of strangers. Giovanni Dozzini's novel "Here I Should Stay" is about the middle-aged painter Luca Bregolise. The hero, like the author of the book, lives in Perugia, Italy.

In the last ten years, many immigrants have appeared in Perugia. The life of the city and its residents is no longer peaceful and safe, there are constant robberies and fights. Residents do not feel safe in their hometown, they are afraid and wish for when there were no emigrants in the city. The book is about those thoughts and worries.

The main character of the book participated in various social movements in his youth, his wife has not a job, his daughter is four years old, and his communist father is retired. Bregolise is angry with the immigrants who disturb the peace of his city. His assistant Nabil's minor son is a drug dealer. Moroccan Nabil constantly must stop work to help his son stay out of trouble.

The novel "Here I Should Stay" is a flow of sixteen days of internal reflection. It is written in the first person and present tense, which allows the reader to see the world through Bregolise's eyes. Critics called the book a powerful and important novel about mistrust of strangers and internal fears. Italian writer, translator, and journalist Giovanni Dozzini wrote his first novel in 2005. His books have been translated into many languages. In 2019, he became a laureate of the EU Prize for Literature.

The novel "Here I Should Stay" was published in 2021. Through the extensive monologue of his hero, Brego, Dozzini analyzes the complex socio-political situation in the country and shows that his people want to live without immigrants and the crisis caused by the institutional left.
