Newmag Publishing House has published “Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting” by behaviorist Noel Janis-Norton as part of its Yeraz book series. Designed for both parents and professionals, the practical guide offers strategies for making the often challenging process of parenting calmer, more effective, and more enjoyable.
The book was featured on Armenia TV’s “Good Morning” program, with the participation of translator Naira Muradyan, editor and head of Newmag’s Yeraz series Gohar Manukyan, and Angela Manasyan, Head of the Parenting Group at Usum School.
Translator Naira Muradyan believes that parenting is an instinct that also needs to be developed and refined.
“Parents often say, ‘We raised our children without books, and everything turned out fine.’ But modern parenting comes with many new challenges. Parents need practical tools, and this book provides exactly that. Noel Janis-Norton presents positive parenting strategies that help create a calm family atmosphere without fear, punishment, or constant restrictions. The answers to many of the questions parents face every day can be found in this book.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its practicality. It does not rely on abstract theories or complicated psychological concepts. Instead, it presents real-life situations and concrete solutions. The author discusses topics such as praise, discipline, cooperation, and communication. She explains why encouragement is more effective than criticism and why vague praise should be replaced with meaningful, descriptive feedback.
The author also emphasizes the importance of consistency among family members. Parents should work together and follow the same principles so that children receive clear messages and expectations. One particularly useful method is the ‘Reflective Conversation,’ during which parents briefly discuss inappropriate behavior, its consequences, and possible alternatives with the child. These conversations should be short and engaging, allowing children to participate actively and think about solutions themselves.”
Gohar Manukyan, editor of the book and head of Newmag’s Yeraz series, noted that the publishing house carefully selects books that address different stages and challenges of raising children.
“This book focuses on one of the most demanding periods of childhood, ages 3 to 13. Noel Janis-Norton draws on more than four decades of professional experience as a behaviorist and parenting expert. She does not promise miracles. Instead, she offers practical strategies that help parents build healthier relationships with their children.
One of the most valuable lessons in the book is learning patience. Another strategy that particularly stood out to me is the ‘Don’t Say It Twice’ approach. Many parents find themselves repeating the same request ten or twenty times without any result. The author clearly explains how to communicate in a way that allows a parent to say something once and be heard. I believe this is one of the book’s most useful tools.”
Angela Manasyan, Head of the Parenting Group at Usum School, spoke about the importance of working not only with children but also with their parents.
“We realized that meaningful educational results are possible only when schools and parents work together. That is why we established the Conscious Parenting Club.
Many of the challenges families face today, including attention difficulties, concentration problems, and motivation issues, are addressed in this book. The recommendations are highly practical. As an educator, I would especially highlight the section on homework.
Homework is a challenge in almost every family. We teach children how to eat, dress, and behave independently, yet when it comes to homework, parents often become overly involved because they worry about results. The book offers useful strategies for helping children become more responsible and independent.
Another valuable aspect of the book is its emphasis on trust. It teaches parents how to build relationships in which children feel safe turning to them in difficult situations. I also found the concept of ‘Descriptive Praise’ particularly effective. Instead of generic compliments, parents learn to notice and describe exactly what their child has done well, which strengthens confidence and motivation.”
Through step-by-step strategies and practical examples, Noel Janis-Norton helps parents reduce stress, build positive family routines, and create more trusting relationships with their children. Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting offers realistic, effective solutions for everyday parenting challenges and may be especially useful during the summer holidays, when families spend more time together.
“Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting” by Noel Janis-Norton has been translated into Armenian by Naira Muradyan and published by Newmag Publishing House as part of the Yeraz series.
