Marc Nishanyan

Marc Nishanyan (born 1946) was born in Paris. He was the son of a family from Caesarea. He received his primary education in a French school. He also had capable Armenian teachers, including the wife of Dikran Chitouni from Van. He spent his childhood in the intellectual circles of Paris. In the house of his aunt’s husband, the intellectual Hagop Der Hagopian from Partizan, Aharon had the opportunity to get to know, as well as representatives of the intellectual class of the time. He received his university education in Armenian from the School of Oriental Languages. He studied philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, following the classes of Jacques Derrida’s first generation students, Jean-Luc Nancy and Philippe Lacoux-Laparte. He began his series of "Kam-handes Analytical" in 1980. He published four volumes by 1986. Later, he resumed his work and published two more new volumes in 2002 and 2005. For the pages of the handes, he translated Maurice Blanchot, Georges Bataille, Walter Benjamin, Friedrich Nietzsche, J.L. Nancy, Junker, A. Berman, and German novelists Schlegel and others. In 1995-1996, he taught Armenian studies at UCLA in Los Angeles. From 1996 to 2007, he was the head of the Armenian studies department at Columbia University. Afterwards, he was a visiting lecturer in Istanbul, serving at Sapanca University, as well as in Beirut, at Haigazian University.
