King Pap lived 1,651 years ago, yet his story—and the lessons and political philosophy drawn from it—continues to preoccupy not only historians, but also politicians and regimes across different eras. Over time, Pap’s legacy has been repeatedly reframed and deployed as an ideological instrument. The most recent examples include the Soviet period, when his image was invoked within an anti-church agenda, and the present day, when efforts are underway to reinterpret Pap through contemporary geopolitical and civilizational lenses.

This episode on King Pap of the Arsacid dynasty is grounded exclusively in evidence. There are only three primary sources on Pap: the Armenian historians Movses Khorenatsi and Pavstos Buzand, and the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus. Drawing on these accounts, we examine who Pap truly was, the historical circumstances that shaped his rise, what he sought to accomplish, how his life ended, what he left behind, and—ultimately—the enduring lessons of his reign.
