Newmag Publishing House presented two motivational and educational books on Armenia TV’s Good Morning program - global bestsellers by American scientist, psychologist, and one of the youngest professors in U.S. history, Adam Grant. Armenian readers are now introduced to Originals and Hidden Potential, two works that explore human potential, originality, and long-term success.
Newmag Editor-in-Chief Gnel Nalbandyan spoke about the choice of the Armenian title for Originals. Several options were discussed, including “Identity Types,” “Unique,” and “Inimitable,” with the publishing house ultimately choosing “Originals” as the most accurate reflection of the author’s idea.
“Adam Grant explains that people are capable of developing any of their qualities, sharpening strengths, overcoming weaknesses, and transforming themselves. Based on scientific research, the book shows how to gain an advantage in a competitive environment and achieve success,” Nalbandyan noted.
In Originals, Adam Grant references George Bernard Shaw’s famous idea that while intelligent people adapt to the world, unconventional ones adapt the world to themselves. According to the editor, progress is driven not by those who simply adapt, but by those who dare to be different.
“To change reality, one must be rebellious, non-conformist, and resistant to blind adaptation. We often teach children to be ‘smart’ and not stand out, yet it is precisely the rebellious ones who ultimately succeed.”
Grant draws on extensive scientific research, personal experience, and real-life examples to show that originality is shaped both by genetics and environment. People can be born original, but they can also become original. The author challenges many commonly accepted truths and offers advice that encourages readers to rethink familiar ideas.
The Armenian publication of Adam Grant’s books was recommended by Ara Chalabyan, author of the “Plain and Simple” podcast, who has read all of Grant’s works.
“I used to believe that books should only be read in the original language, but I realized how many people don’t speak English. During Newmag’s Winterfest, I suggested that Newmag translates Originals and Hidden Potential into Armenian.”
Chalabyan emphasized that Adam Grant is an organizational psychologist whose books are grounded entirely in scientific research. His studies include educational models and experiments conducted not only in the United States, but across many countries.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, Chalabyan also participated in Adam Grant’s online lectures together with his students. He especially recommends these books to young readers, educators, and parents.
“I try to notice and motivate students who are often overlooked-not necessarily the top achievers. Grant argues that original thinkers are often invisible. They may not stand out outwardly, but they are the ones who challenge the status quo.”
In Hidden Potential, Grant explores the concept of talent, emphasizing that it is not a fixed gift but something that can be discovered and developed. Every person has their own strengths, which may remain hidden without the right environment, discipline, and encouragement.
Grant shares powerful examples, including the story of a blind woman who won a Grammy despite being rejected by a music school. He demonstrates that success in areas such as sports or education often depends not on talent alone, but on discipline, perseverance, and character.
Adam Grant divides his time between academic research and lectures worldwide. His findings show that children who develop responsibility, initiative, social skills, and discipline at an early age are more likely to achieve long-term success and higher income later in life.
Both Originals and Hidden Potential were translated from English into Armenian by Liana Zakaryan.

Description
Psychologists describe two primary routes to success: **adaptation** and **originality**. Adaptors align their beliefs and behavior with group norms. Originals challenge the current—advancing ideas that defy clichés and, in time, move the world forward. This book explores how any of us can become more original. Originality isn’t about refusing reality; it’s about refusing resignation—choosing to improve circumstances instead of simply adjusting to them. When was the last time you had a truly fresh idea? Many of us, chasing approval and fearing failure, choose to fit in rather than stand out.
