Months ago, Newmag started an unprecedented project to equip community libraries with modern publications. This exclusive initiative is becoming a reality thanks to local businessmen.
In the summer, the Freedom Broker Armenia helped several libraries in Lori receive 1,000 books. The project is ongoing. Recently, Newmag visited the Tavush region, where the "Centralized System of Dilijan Libraries" was replenished with 250 books.
This time, we were joined by Artak Shavarsh Tamamyan, whose support ensures that the books from the publishing house find a place in the library. Artak Tamamyan is a businessman affiliated with the prominent Armenian business network, the "Mantashyants" club.
To celebrate this event, a gathering was organized at the children's music school in Dilijan, where Artak Aleksanyan, the head of the publishing house, and translator Davit Sargsyan presented the book donation initiative and the publishing house's activities.
According to Artak Aleksanyan, the literary collections in the regions of Armenia have not been updated for decades. This program will be unprecedented in the literary life of the Armenian regions, as community libraries will be stocked with modern publications.
"The books we publish should not be available only to the readers of Yerevan. We have decided to implement a new approach by inviting businessmen to help replenish libraries with new, fresh, in-demand books. We brought 80 books: children's, sports, fiction, and historical editions that are interesting and useful for the new generation. I am confident that these new books will attract more readers to the library."
The Dilijan municipality presented symbolic gifts to the representatives of the publishing house in appreciation of their cooperation.
The library named after Ghazaros Aghayan was founded in 1908 next to the parish school. In that same year, the newly established library became independent from the school. It was named after Ghazaros Aghayan in honor of his 40th birthday. In 1975, eight public and two children's libraries in the city were centralized, creating a system that serves the readers of the city as well as neighboring villages and towns.
The book donation project is an exclusive social corporate responsibility initiative encompassing educational, charitable, and community self-organization components.
Unfortunately, the shelves of more than 350 community libraries in our country have not been updated with new books for years. Most books on these shelves are 30 years old or more, outdated and faded.
This program aims to transfer knowledge, information, and ideas to the regional community for a shared, civilized future.
