Even the smallest creature matters in nature, this is the message at the heart of “Extinctopedia”, the beautifully illustrated children’s book by Italian author Serenella Quarello and illustrator Alessio Alcini. The newest addition to Newmag’s Dream Book Series invites children and adults on a fascinating journey into the world of extinct and endangered animals.
Serenella Quarello is a celebrated Italian children’s author, translator, and Spanish language teacher. She teaches at the Caluso Linguistic High School and leads the student theater group Las Máscaras. Quarello is known for writing fiction and educational literature that tackles environmental issues, helping children and teenagers develop an appreciation for the world around them.
The book is co-authored by illustrator Alessio Alcini, who specializes in children’s literature. In 2020, his works were showcased at the renowned Bologna Children’s Book Fair, further solidifying his reputation for vibrant and thoughtful illustration.
“Extinctopedia” introduces young readers to a variety of extinct and endangered animal species. Each page reveals the stories of known and lesser-known creatures, from Martha the passenger pigeon and George the lonely snail to the iconic dodo and the Tasmanian tiger. The book highlights how each species, no matter how small or obscure, plays a vital role in the ecosystem.
But this work goes beyond storytelling. It teaches an essential truth: the disappearance of even a single species is a loss for all of nature. “Extinctopedia” encourages children to think critically about the importance of biodiversity and to understand that protecting animals is also about preserving the planet’s balance and future.
Importantly, the book doesn’t only focus on what has been lost. It also offers hope and practical advice on what children and their families can do to prevent further extinctions and care for our natural world.
Designed for readers aged 6–9, the book is written in accessible language yet offers meaningful content. Alcini’s bold and colorful illustrations bring each story to life, helping young readers connect emotionally with the animals featured in the book.
The Armenian edition of “Extinctopedia” was translated by Lusine Shukuryan, ensuring a faithful and engaging experience for local readers. Thanks to her translation, Armenian children will be able to fully enjoy the educational, literary, and visual qualities of the book.
“Extinctopedia” is part of Newmag’s “Yeraz” Book Series. The book’s main partner is Yeraz Projects.
The presentation will take place on June 21, the first day of Newmag Summerfest 2025, at 6:00 PM in Yeraz Park.
