Newmag Publishing House presented the Armenian edition of Vahagn Dadrian’s landmark work “The History of the Armenian Genocide” on the “Good Morning” program of Armenia TV. The book, considered one of the most important scholarly works on the subject, was originally published in 1995 and is now available in Armenian for the first time.
Vahagn Dadrian, a renowned Armenian-American scholar, historian, sociologist, and one of the founding figures of genocide studies, based his research on a vast range of official Turkish, German, and Austrian archival sources. The publication of the Armenian edition was made possible with the support of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and “Hayaqve.”
Avetik Chalabyan, coordinator of the “Hayaqve” initiative, emphasized the enduring value of the work:
“This is a monumental book. Dadrian went beyond Turkish sources and unearthed extensive documentation from Germany and Austria—Ottoman allies whose archives are impeccably preserved. His work proves that the Genocide is not just a matter of historical debate, but a documented crime against humanity that still shapes our reality today.”
Chalabyan stressed the need for continued publication of such academic works, noting that the Genocide has layers that remain understudied.
“We once proposed a draft law criminalizing Genocide denial and distortion, something the government failed to support. But justice will eventually require recognition and reparations from Turkey, even if the form of that compensation is still up for discussion.”
Editor of the Armenian edition Armen Amirkhanyan spoke about the exceptional depth and scope of Dadrian’s scholarship:
“He decoded classified materials, mastered multiple languages, and traced the Genocide’s roots back a century. Dadrian's work goes further, comparing the Armenian case to others like the Holocaust, and highlighting how Armenians were targeted in every dimension, ethnic, cultural, linguistic.”
Amirkhanyan added that the book should be essential reading for lawmakers, diplomats, scholars, and anyone involved in public life or human rights discourse.
The Armenian release of “The History of the Armenian Genocide” was part of the four-day Genocide Studies Week organized by Newmag and AGBU to mark the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The week featured the presentation of two major genocide studies books and a documentary photo album on the Artsakh war.
AGBU Armenia’s Cultural Programs and Media Director Vardan Tsulikyan underlined the importance of the initiative:
“This is not our first collaboration with Newmag. We previously co-published a book by Taner Akçam. It was only natural that AGBU support this scientific week, which brings lasting value to the field of genocide studies.”
Tsulikyan also reiterated AGBU’s enduring mission: education, support for Armenia’s development, and the preservation and promotion of the Armenian language and identity.
With its publication in Armenian, “The History of the Armenian Genocide” offers a vital foundation for future scholars and ensures Dadrian’s legacy remains a pillar of Armenian and global genocide research.
