Its author, Megan McDonald, is an American children's writer who grew up in a large family where storytelling and joking around were everyday traditions. Loving books from early childhood, Megan began writing her own stories with her mother's encouragement.

She attended Oberlin College, earning a Bachelor's degree in English and Literature with a specialization in children's literature. Later, she received a Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Before becoming a full-time author, McDonald worked in a bookstore, served as a librarian, worked as a museum guide, and performed as a storyteller.
