04/17/2025

On April 20, Swiss-Armenian photojournalist Demir Sönmez will arrive in Armenia. His visit will include the presentation of his documentary photo album “Wounded Eagle” as part of “Genocide Studies Week,” as well as a book tour introducing his work to Armenian readers.
Sönmez has documented the tragedy of Artsakh with raw honesty, no editing, no filters, capturing events as they unfolded. In “Wounded Eagle”, he powerfully conveys the stories and resilience of the people of Artsakh. The images are accompanied by the author’s reflections, immersing the reader in the emotional reality of war.
The bilingual (Armenian-French) album “The Wounded Eagle: The Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) War” covers the key events from 2020 to 2023. It offers a poignant look at the battlefield, the empty streets of Stepanakert, and the civilians caught in the fog of war.
Born in Karin and educated in Ankara, Demir Sönmez has lived in Geneva since 1990. In the 1980s, he worked in journalism and photography in Turkey but was forced to leave due to political pressure. Since 2006, he has resumed his career as a photojournalist. A member of Reporters Without Borders and the International Federation of Journalists, Sönmez has been a columnist for “Tribune de Genève” since 2009. His work, widely exhibited and published, focuses on human rights, social justice, and diversity.
“Wounded Eagle” is not only a collection of powerful images, it is a vital historical document that preserves the lived experience of the people of Artsakh and captures the irreversible consequences of war.
From April 21 to 24, Newmag and AGBU Armenia will host “Genocide Studies Week” in Yerevan with the support of an AGBU grant. The four-day program will feature book launches and a panel discussion with Armenian and international experts and writers. The presentation of Demir Sönmez’s “Wounded Eagle” will take place on April 23 at 7:00 PM. Admission is free, and attendees will receive a 30% discount on the book.
