Journalist and writer Marianna Hakobyan presented her new detective novel “Don’t Change the Names” on the “Good Morning” program of the Armenia TV
Hakobyan worked on the book for about five years, combining research and archival work during the writing process. According to the author, the novel contains historical events that required careful study to ensure authenticity. For example, one of the episodes involves a hit-and-run incident, for which she consulted journalist Gagik Shamshyan.
The writer emphasized that every detail is crucial in a detective story, describing the genre as an intellectual game between the reader and the author. She also compared detective literature to the rhythm of the human heart, noting that such works should evoke a wide spectrum of emotions.
The novel tells the tragic story of a woman based on real-life events. The narrative is intertwined with factual circumstances that deeply affected the author as a journalist. Hakobyan explained that journalists often change names when writing about real stories, while in this book the title “Don’t Change the Names” reflects a different approach. She believes readers will fully understand the meaning of the title after finishing the book.
The story unfolds across several time periods, blending the past, present, and future with the heroine’s inner monologues. The novel also explores the complex question of truth — whether it should be revealed, kept secret, or taken to the grave in silence.
The author noted that dialogue is one of the most challenging and at the same time most beloved elements of her writing. Through conversations, she reveals the characters’ personalities, charisma, humor, and inner world, allowing their true essence to emerge.
