“Tomorrow is One More Day” is the most significant novel of G. Nagarajan. The work is an existentialist and social-realist narrative that portrays one ordinary day in the life of Kandan, a fraudulent middleman and pimp rejected by society.
The story unfolds within a randomly chosen day that resembles all other days, filled with sadness, bitterness, and a sense of meaninglessness. Nothing changes; life moves in a repetitive circle. The protagonist, Kandan, lives on the social margins, surrounded by petty criminals, swindlers, and opportunistic brokers. His “one day” becomes a philosophical condensation of existence itself.
Born in 1929, Nagarajan was one of the most distinctive voices of Tamil literature. He was known for his bold and introspective prose, which challenged both literary conventions and social norms. Demonstrating natural literary talent from a young age, he pursued literature and philosophy. He passed away at the age of 51, leaving behind a compact but highly valuable legacy of approximately 30 short stories, philosophical essays, and three novels.
His most important work, “Tomorrow is One More Day”, was written in the early 1970s and focuses on individuals who live on the margins of society, people whose existence is often overlooked. Through these characters, the author explores the deeper mystery of human life and social reality.
The novel was written in the ancient Dravidian language Tamil, which has a literary history spanning more than two thousand years, and is considered one of the key works of modern Tamil prose. The story is set in the brothels and distilleries of Chennai (formerly Madras).
Nagarajan examines time, desire, alienation, and existential dead ends with sharp social observation and philosophical restraint. Although Kandan is morally flawed, traces of humanity remain within him. The novel’s power emerges from this inner contradiction.
The style of the work has been compared to the lyrical despair of Albert Camus and the harsh realism of Maxim Gorky, while preserving its own unique literary voice. Nagarajan neither justifies nor condemns his protagonist; he simply presents life without romanticization.
The book was translated from English by Anna Abrahamyan and is published by Newmag Publishing House.
“Tomorrow is One More Day” is available for purchase on the newmag.am website, at the Book Salon (Tumanyan 35), and in selected bookstores.
