Newmag Publishing House has published in Armenian “The Screwtape Letters: Letters from the Elder Devil to the Younger Devil” by Clive Lewis, the author of the global bestsellers Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. The book presentation was broadcast on Armenia TV’s Good Morning program.
Clive Lewis is one of the most influential thinkers and writers of the 20th century. He was a researcher and lecturer in English literature at Oxford University and later headed the Department of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University. He authored more than 30 books, which continue to captivate readers worldwide.
The Screwtape Letters is written in the form of letters, in which the Elder Demon Screwtape instructs his nephew, Wormwood, on how to tempt and mislead humans, diverting them from the path of righteousness.
The book was introduced to Armenian readers by Vahagn Poghosyan, director of the Center for the Development of Scientific Research and Cultural Foundation, who praised the work as both insightful and relevant. According to him, Lewis’ books explain the fundamentals of Christianity in a clear and accessible way.
“This is an especially valuable book for young people and teenagers. Lewis has a notable saying: ‘Christianity opens with water.’ He presents God and Christian teachings in a patristic manner, without relying on theological jargon. In this kind of literature, Lewis is unmatched,” Poghosyan said.
He emphasized the importance of the book in the context of post-Soviet society, where many were not educated in Christian traditions. Lewis demonstrates the significance of church, prayer, and spiritual practices.
“Now more than ever, it is relevant to read Christian literature. We need to reflect on ourselves and reconsider our materialism. In much of the modern world, unbelief is sometimes seen as a symbol of education, which can lead to personal misfortune and even the weakening of societies and civilizations,” Poghosyan added.
He recommended The Screwtape Letters to all thoughtful readers, particularly those seeking genuine traditions, deep culture, and meaningful literature in an era marked by anti-traditionalism and secular propaganda.

Description
C. S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters is a sharp, enduring work of moral and theological satire. Framed as a series of letters from the senior devil Screwtape to his inexperienced nephew Wormwood, the book offers an incisive anatomy of temptation—showing how vanity, self-deception, ambition, and materialism can derail a person’s spiritual growth. Through this epistolary device, Lewis illuminates the dynamics of moral struggle and underscores the centrality of human freedom and responsibility. Clear-sighted, witty, and unsettling in its realism, The Screwtape Letters affirms Lewis’s stature as both thinker and stylist, remaining relevant for readers who wish to scrutinize their values and examine the choices that shape character.
