Swiss-Armenian photojournalist Demir Sönmez has arrived in Armenia to present his latest book, “The Wounded Eagle”, published by Newmag. The presentation will take place on April 23 at 19:00, at AGBU, as part of the four-day “Genocide Studies Week.”
The photo-documentary “The Wounded Eagle” was introduced to the public during Armenia TV’s “Good Morning” morning show. In the book, Demir Sönmez documents the 2020 Artsakh War, the blockade, and the forced displacement that followed.
“During the war, I was in Karabakh as an independent journalist and documentarian,” said Sönmez. “After returning to Geneva, I began working on this book. It contains not only photographs but also my personal reflections, eyewitness accounts, historical documentation, and a detailed chronology of events. I also included commentary from international organizations, Swiss politicians, and my own analyses. This is more than a photo album, it’s a narrative record of what happened in Artsakh.”
Sönmez believes “The Wounded Eagle” serves as a powerful documentary and historical source that captures the reality on the ground during and after the war. His photographs and testimonies have already been used by international and Swiss organizations and are housed in major institutions, including the libraries of the United Nations and Geneva.
The book is bilingual, Armenian and French, and is being presented within the framework of “Genocide Studies Week,” organized by Newmag Publishing House and AGBU. The special event marks the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and features a series of book presentations and panel discussions on genocide studies.
