The “Good Morning” program on Armenia TV featured the Armenian edition of the novel Tomorrow Is One More Day, written in Tamil, a Dravidian language with a literary history spanning more than 2,000 years. The translator and editor of the book spoke about the work and the challenges of bringing it to Armenian readers.

The book’s translator, Anna Abrahamyan, translated the novel from English, as there was no direct Tamil edition available for translation. The English version was prepared by Ebi Zifren, a student of G. Nagarajan, who translated the work from the author’s original Tamil manuscript.

“Ebi Zifren was one of the advocates of Tamil literature, and she did that translation with great love and soul. There were difficulties, because Nagarajan knew English very well, but he made many transcriptions”.

These interesting transcriptions and changes had to be presented in such a way that the reader would understand the nuances. Nagarajan presents brothels and scammers in amazing detail. The street vocabulary, swear words, invented English very clearly and simply show the life of people living in the slums.”

The main character of the book is Kandan, a scammer and a pimp whose days pass in monotonous repetition.

“The vanity and monotony of life are also shown by the title of the book: “Tomorrow Is One More Day”. For the heroes of the book, days have no meaning, there is no change, no progress.

Kandan is not interested in anything, neither money nor wealth; he simply once wanted a better life. Nagarajan shows that sometimes people reach a dead end and choose not to leave it.”

G. Nagarajan was considered the “white crow” of his time, a writer who stood apart from literary traditions. He wrote a small number of works, but they were sharp, concise, and powerful. His writing played an important role in the development of modern Tamil literature.

The editor of the Armenian edition, Margarit Sargsyan, noted that the author presents a side of India rarely seen by outsiders.

“The real India is the one with real problems and diversity: the backwaters, people living in different social realities.

But the book also has a message: through his stories, the author shows that people often postpone their lives, they wait for summer, spring, Monday. We worry about the future, but sometimes happiness is hidden in small everyday things.”

According to the editor and translator, the novel also reminds readers how far real life can be from the glamorous reality often portrayed on social media.

“Tomorrow Is One More Day” stands out as a unique addition to contemporary Armenian translated literature, introducing readers to a powerful and rarely translated voice from Tamil literature.

Description

The book "Tomorrow is one more day" is an existentialist and social-realist novel that tells the story of a day in the life of Kandan, a forgotten, dirty, morally deviant city. He is a fraudulent middleman, a pimp, rejected by people and living in the lower classes. He regularly cheats, exploits others, but even in that miserable existence he retains some traces of humanity. Through this story, the author explores the themes of time, desire, alienation and existence with philosophical depth and literary precision. His prose is distinguished by its existential tone, social realism and clear reflection of the psychological complexes of the characters. Nagarajan focused his literary attention on people who remained on the margins of life, brought their voices to literature and through them explored the mystery of life.
