Description

Cécile dies in a plane crash at the age of twenty-seven. The novel’s protagonist, who shared a brief romance with her in his youth, continues to feel her elusive, almost gentle presence long after her death. Yet with time, even the memory of Cécile begins to fade.

Then, one day, he catches sight of a woman on the street who bears an uncanny resemblance to her. He begins to follow the stranger, seized by an impossible thought: what if it really is Cécile, somehow returned to him through a rupture in space and time? Gradually, absence gives way to obsession, and he begins to imagine the countless lives Cécile might have lived had she survived.

Philippe Marczewski constructs Quand Cécile as a single, sustained sentence—one continuous breath, as though placing a full stop would mean allowing Cécile to disappear once and for all. The form mirrors the movement of memory itself: fluid, associative, persistent, yet always vulnerable to erasure.

What place do we preserve within ourselves for those we have loved—for those who have left, and those who have vanished? With remarkable delicacy, Marczewski explores the fragile border between memory and oblivion, and the strange ways in which the absent continue to inhabit the lives of those who remain.
