Newmag publishing house presented its two French bestsellers on the Morning Show of Armenia TV. The presentations took place recently at the French content festival.

At Francofest 2024, the publishing house showcased Amélie Nothomb's "The Enemy's Cosmetique" and Agnès Martin-Lugand’s "Happiness Hanging by a Thread". Amélie Nothomb is recognized as one of the most provocative authors of modern French literature, often referred to as Divine Amélie or the Gothic Princess of Europe. Taguhi Blbulyan, the translator of the Armenian edition, spoke about the book.

"The author is very famous in the francophone world; she is a fascinating character who publishes a novel every year. She has written 132 novels, of which 32 have been published. "The Enemy's Cosmetique" explores the theme of man and his inner enemy. The author poses questions: Who are we? Do we know our internal enemy? In what form will it appear before us? Nothomb is known for the surprises she presents to her readers. You never know how her books will end; it is always a surprise."

Amélie Nothomb is considered the queen of dialogues, creating rhythmic and dynamic works that captivate readers. "This book deals with the relationship between man and his sin. It is reminiscent of Sartre's "No Exit" or Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment".

Agnès Martin-Lugand is a clinical psychologist. Her first book, titled "Happy People Read and Drink Coffee", was also published in Armenian by Newmag. The author presents characters seeking to change their lives in her writings. Hasmik Arakelyan, the translator of both books, emphasizes that the author avoids complicated psychological jargon, opting instead for simple and accessible language.

"It's a straightforward story about a girl who changes her profession and life. We often fall victim to stereotypes that suggest a girl should choose a 'good' profession—such as law or medicine—thereby stifling her desires. This book illustrates how a beloved profession can inspire and empower. I believe that choosing a profession is akin to choosing a spouse; you can't live with someone you don't love."

The book also touches on fashion. At the age of 30, the main character begins to embrace her passion for clothing design. The translator assures readers that they will find the essence of Parisian fashion within its pages. "The main heroine is obsessed with fashion, and through this book, you will encounter Parisian elegance and the scent of French perfume."

Both books are available in bookstores and the newmag.am website.
