The TV presentation of the book “New Day” by Greek writer Nikos Chrysos (video)

“New Day” is a multi-layered and multi-faceted novel, the result of the writer's years of research. Chrysos guides us into the world of homeless people, which is very close but also very far. A world we see but ignore. The characters he creates come from the past and clumsily establish themselves in an empty and desperate environment. The translator of the book is Shushan Maruki. According to her, this work speaks loudly about important social, political, and moral issues.

“The advantage of this novel is that this very difficult plot is presented in such a way that it becomes literature. Because I can talk about this in different ways. When I started translating, I decided to first study the writer, and then move on to translation. Though I have dealt with the Bible in terms of editing and proofreading, at first, I did not have an association with it. But at a certain point, I discovered that the main character of the book is like Christ, and those 4 people who tell Sebastian's story from different perspectives, his apostles”.

The editor of the novel, Anna Bakhshyan, believes that the novel is a search for justice, injustice, crime, punishment, and the problems of getting rid of the sense of guilt. It is no coincidence that many literary critics try to compare it to the New Testament.

“The story is borrowed from the story of the New Testament. Why? I think the author chooses people who are in that borderline situation, those who are at the bottom of society: thieves, prostitutes, vagrants. Characters that are in the lowest position in society, who ended up homeless for various reasons, but ended up. To make it worse, to show in a more obvious way the ills in society, as well as the multi-layered social and household problems of today's Europe, which are present in almost all countries”.

Priest Tovma Andreasyan is sure that the book has high merits and can help many people to get out of indifference and sympathize with the homeless. “There is no mention of God in the book, it is about humanity. Our work is related to people, we work to help individuals. In general, the world is in a process that leads to the destruction of all human values, a process of judgment, and works of art like this are important to prevent that process”.
